Annie Shepherd Swan (July 8, 1859 - June 17, 1943) was a Scottish writer, journalist, novelist and short story writer. Although she used her maiden name for most of her literary career, Swan also wrote under the pen names "David Lyall" and later "Mrs. Burnett-Smith". She was a highly popular writer of romantic fiction for young women during the Victorian era and published more than 200 novels, serials, short stories and other works of fiction from 1878 to her death in 1943. She was writing stories for "British Weekly" dealing with the Boer War, which were thought by some readers at the time to have been written by a genuine war correspondent. This book's story starts with some unfortunate circumstances, when the children of Mrs. Maitland's good friend come to visit Young Effie is quite excited to meet poor little Agnes, one of the visiting children. As the girls become acquainted and grow up, they learn important lessons about life and morality. The book is covered in blue cloth (with a little wear on edges) with gold, white and black lettering and pictorals. There is a dedication stamp on inside cover. Binding is good with no loose pages. There are 447 pages. Published by Oliphant Anderson & Ferrier, Edinburgh and London - 1891
