Howard Pease (1894–1974) was an American writer of adventure stories from Stockton, California. Most of his stories revolved around a young protagonist, Joseph Todhunter ("Tod") Moran who shipped out on tramp freighters during the interwar years. For most of his life Pease resided in the San Francisco area, except for those times when he shipped out as a member of the crew on a freighter, searching for new material. In addition to writing children's stories Pease taught high school, contributed to journals and reviewed books for the New York Times. This is the third book in the Tod Moran high seas adventures and is the first book which doesn't use Tod Moran's point of view, but instead uses that of another character. Stuart Ormsby is a military kid who can't make it at West Point Military Academy and in fleeing his disappointed family gets Shanghaied aboard the Nanking bound for China. He meets up with Tod Moran and Tom Jarvis also aboard the ship to investigate foul play. This book is covered in red cloth with black lettering with very minor wear. There is a booksellers stamp on inside cover. The binding is solid with no loose pages. There are 301 pages. It measures 7 5/8" x 5". Published by Doubleday, Doran & Company, Garden City, NY - 1929
